I prefer keeping private matters private. While with most things it would not really be a problem if they alone become known to a third party, some are absolutely confidential, and lots of seemingly harmless information combined can still be a problem. Also You want to be sure messages You receive are really from the sender the message claims it was sent by. There are more or less strong pressures in many countries to forbid the private use of strong asymetric encryption devices and software, the primary means of keeping digital information secret and verifying authorship. Thus to make sure strong cryptography is available and legal when it is needed, it has to be widely known and people have to be aware of it. In particular do I encourage everybody to use ciphered e-mail whenever possible.
Many freely available mail user agents today do provide an interface to equally free encryption software, especially the very recommendable GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG). Of course to be able to send me encrypted messages and verify those sent to You are actually from me requires a unique number, my public key.
